Foreigners visiting Sri Lanka look for to view natural wonders like Ella and of historical monuments like Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Hire a bullock driven cart to go around the villages to have first hand view of the village life. This Bullock cart don't need driver's license. So after some hours of training you can learn to ride the bullock cart with the owner. If you are riding a bullock cart in the night time, then you must have a well lit lantern under the body of the cart for other's view of your cart. Time to time you have to provide water for the bull. Some carts used to have two bulls attached to it to get more riding power.

The travel on the bullock cart is not a comfortable one but a thrilling experience for the visiting tourists. Carts don't have shock absorbers, brakes, leather seats and so on. You have to sit on wooden planks on the cart that is made for seating purpose. It is similar to riding on Donkey in Greece and riding camel in the Middle East countries.

In the mean time there are British invented modern bullock carts with spring plates and well designed seating with red leather cover facility. There is a door to climb in to the passenger section of the cart. They have lantern on each side of the cart. It is with magnifying glass to remit light in the front side while the behind one is with red glass to warn the vehicles that ar coming behind. These British Cars usually driven by a powerful single bull. These can be rented for Rs 5,000/- per day with the rider / owner.

In addition you can find "Thirukkal" Carts that are good for racing purpose and not safe to ride on streets as the bulls are young and powerful. The can catch up to 40Km/Hr which is impossible to control on traffic filled roads. But “Thirukkal” are good for ride on sports ground with the owner as the driver for the cart.
